Supporters hope to someday have a 30-mile bike and pedestrian Rogue River Greenway trail stretching between Central Point and Grants Pass. The Bear Creek Greenway asphalt path already runs from Central Point to Ashland. The commissioners approved spending $47,000 toward design, survey work and right-of-way acquisition for a planned 2.5-mile segment of the Rogue River Greenway trail along North River Road between Gold Hill and the town of Rogue River. The county will be reimbursed that amount by the Rogue River Greenway Foundation, which has been fundraising for this project, Jackson County Roads and Parks Director John Vial. The Jackson County money will be pooled with $450,000 in Oregon Department of Transportation funding for the preparatory work needed for the segment. Once that work is done, the project will be ready to put out for bid on construction, according to Jackson County officials. "Why it's important and why we're excited about this design and right-of-way acquisition funding is if we can get a construction grant, this will connect Rogue River and Gold Hill," said Vial. He said some greenway sections already exist between the two towns, but they don't yet connect. Various segments of the Rogue River Greenway trail are already complete, including a popular section between the town of Rogue River and Valley of the Rogue State Park. Some sections are stand-alone paved paths, while others are bike lanes on roads through communities. Vial said the engineering and design work for the 2.5-mile segment between Gold Hill and Rogue River will determine whether it's feasible for that stretch to be a separate path or a bike lane. The Rogue River Greenway Foundation is working to secure more funding for the long-term project of completing the 30-mile trail. For more information, visit www.roguerivergreenway.org .
