Amanda Marie Ahulau, 46, of the 800 block of Ellendale Drive, faces charges of attempted murder, fourth-degree assault, strangulation, menacing and harassment for the Dec. 29 incident. After being released from the Jackson County Jail on her own recognizance, she failed to appear for a Thursday arraignment hearing in Jackson County Circuit Court. According to an affidavit by Medford police, the 63-year-old roommate said Ahulau suffers from a mental illness and had been smoking marijuana all night from Dec. 28 into the early-morning hours of Dec. 29. The roommate told police Ahulau was in a bedroom when she started complaining about "friends" being in the room and scratching the walls with their fingernails. The roommate tried to explain there was no one there and asked Ahulau to go outside to smoke her marijuana, but Ahulau allegedly became enraged, the affidavit said. Ahulau allegedly grabbed her roommate by the hair, threw her to a bed and began strangling her. Unable to breathe, the roommate tried to push Ahulau away, but Ahulau allegedly bit the roommate's hand, resulting in clear bite marks, bruising and swelling, the affidavit said. The roommate said she wasn't able to breathe or yell for help. A male roommate heard the disturbance and pulled Ahulau off her, the affidavit said. Ahulau was arrested by police at 2:10 a.m. Dec. 29 and taken to jail, according to the affidavit and court records. Staff reporter Vickie Aldous can be reached at 541-776-4486 or [email protected] .
