Teed off over golfers using parks Why are golfers allowed to use part of Bear Creek Park as a driving range when there are plenty of driving ranges available through out Southern Oregon where they can pay a few bucks to use them? -- Robert L., Medford Fore! It may be time to get a hard hat, Robert. According to Greg Jones, director of Medford's Parks and Recreation Department, golfers are free to use the city's parks as driving ranges if they wish. "We don't encourage that type of use," says Jones, "but the ordinances don't disallow it." He encourages golfers, if they insist on practicing in a park, to use soft golf balls. Those with hard golf balls, he says, should use driving ranges. If golfers are causing a hazard, like aiming for your head or disregarding safety, there is something that can be done. Jones says to call the Parks and Recreation Department (774-2400 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday) and someone there will ask the golfer to leave the park.
