A grand jury in Medford Thursday returned an indictment charging Gerald Thomas Schram, 63, with the Jan. 20, 2014, robbery of the Minute Market at 843 W. Jackson St. The indictment says Schram allegedly obstructed "interstate commerce" by stealing $605 from the store. Medford police reported that a man in a ski mask barged into the store at 7:18 p.m. and told clerks he had a gun, demanding cash from the register. Police said the suspect was seen fleeing the scene on a mountain bike. A police composite sketch from witness descriptions resembles Schram. The robbery charge was added to an existing case charging Schram with robbing the U.S. Bank on Court Street in September. He was originally charged in Jackson County Circuit Court with second-degree robbery and first-degree theft, but the case was later adopted by the U.S. Attorney's Office. Schram also faces state charges of first- and second-degree criminal mischief, conspiracy and attempted escape for allegedly trying to break out of the Jackson County Jail with another prisoner in December while awaiting trial in his bank-robbery case. He had been scheduled for a change of plea in that case Tuesday, but the hearing was continued to April 9. A trial date has yet to be set in the federal robbery case.
