But it may be awhile before airfares come down the way gas pump prices have. Economists say consumers are feeling richer and their retail and travel spending has picked up. But how soon will airline ticket prices begin reflecting falling fuel costs? "We get that question every day," said Chuck Brook of Express Travel in Medford. "From what I understand, the airlines are committed to prices they have already paid because they buy jet fuel in the futures market." Travel industry leaders have suggested fare prices could dip modestly in 2015. "I'm thinking we will see a 5 percent drop next year in the cost of an airline ticket because the fuel contracts will change," Brook said. "But again, we've been seeing planes flying 87 to 92 percent full, which is the best in years. For the first time in I don't know how long, airlines are making money and they want to keep making money." The demand side is booming at the Medford airport, which concluded its best fall season ever in November with its third straight record month of passenger activity. Commercial airlines saw a nearly 11 percent year-over-year gain to 54,920 passengers last month, topping the previous November mark of 52,174 back in 2007. That happens to be the same year when the airport recorded its all-time annual mark of 647,471. Barring a sudden onslaught of fog or external events, that mark easily will be eclipsed this year, with only 40,726 travelers needed to surpass the record. Since the post 9/11 December of 2001, that figure has been exceeded every December. Alaska Air saw an increase of 16.2 percent to account for more than half of the travel, while United Express saw a 6.3 percent gain and Allegiant Air use rose 6.2 percent. Delta Connection slipped 5.7 percent. "Coming out of the recession there was a pent-up demand, and the economy continues to go forward," Brook said. "I don't see any change in travel demand going into the future, regardless of prices, unless it spikes considerably." Brook said a potential 5 percent drop in ticket prices won't make that much difference on the demand side. "Right now it costs $650 to $700 to fly to Hawaii, so that would be 35 bucks or so," he said.
