Your View: DACA editorial was off base Tuesday Oct 17, 2017 at 12:01 AM By Douglas Dusenberry Editor's note: This is in response to the editorial published Thursday, Oct. 12. The editorial "Do right by dreamers," was way off base. Barack Obama's DACA program would almost certainly have been struck down by the courts as unconstitutional. I support President Trump's effort to help these people by putting the issue back in the legislative branch where it can be legally addressed under Article I of the Constitution. The president did the right thing. Worse, after listing some of the conditions that the president requires as part of a larger solution to illegal immigration, the editorial stated that none of those issues have anything to do with DACA. What? How did these people get here in the first place? Mainly through a porous southern border is how they got here. If they are now given what amounts to amnesty without once and for all securing our own borders, we are just setting the table for the next generation of illegals. I refer you to President Reagan's amnesty of 1986. The illegals got their amnesty but the control of the border side of it never happened. Because the "dreamers" were brought here as minors through no fault on their part, they deserve special consideration and should be allowed some sort of legal status. With the exception of having served honorably in the military, however, they should not be automatically granted citizenship. Citizenship should require them to go to the back of the line behind all those who have been waiting for years to legally enter our country.
