Mail Tribune 100, Feb. 28, 1917 Tuesday Feb 28, 2017 at 12:01 AM Feb. 28, 1917 MEDALS RECEIVED FROM WORLDS FAIR FOR VALLEY FRUIT Medals and certificates of award won at the Panama Pacific exposition at San Francisco are being received by local people, who exhibited valley products at the exposition. Each prize winner receives a medal — Honor, Gold, Silver or Bronze — and in addition a beautifully engraved certificate of award. The medals are disks 2-5/6 inches in diameter bearing on one side in bas-relief the tower of jewels, Medal of Award and around the edge Panama Pacific International Exposition, San Francisco. On the reverse side also in bas-relief the body beautifully is typified in the nude figures of a man and woman. Out of a total of 143 awards given the state of Oregon, Jackson county gets 42, with Hood River second with twenty. BODY OF RECLUSE FOUND IN CABIN The body of George Van Tassel, a rancher living on Sampson creek, twelve miles east of Ashland, was discovered in his cabin on Tuesday by neighbors. He had evidently been dead two days. He was a bachelor recluse, living along, and was the owner of several hundred acres of land in that vicinity. His body was brought to this city Tuesday evening by Deputy Coroner Dodge. Examination showed that the man died of natural causes, an inquest being deemed unnecessary. Van tassel had no known relatives in this section, and funeral arrangements are being delayed pending developments. ASHLAND AND VICINITY The special election set for Saturday, March 3, to pass upon the proposition of purchasing Chautaqua park by the city has been postponed. The council at its regular session March 6 will specify a later date. Reason of the change is attributed to a desire to afford more time in which to decide on the merits of the plan and to avoid possible complications.
