Olson paces Panther runners ROSEBURG - South Medford's Shawn Olson pushed the Panthers to the team victory Thursday in a four-way Southern Oregon Conference boys cross country meet at River Forks Park. Olson won the boys 5,000-meter race in 16 minutes, 48 seconds, helping South score 39 points. South placed four competitors in the top 10 and had three finish in the first five. Panthers Alando Pacas took third (17:15), Chris McLean fourth (17:17) and Kyle Lundwell ninth (17:47). "This was a big meet for us to win because we're one of four teams vying for the second spot to state," South coach Bill Rowan said. "I mean, Klamath Union is kind of a shoo-in (for the top spot)." In the girls 5,000 race, Melis Garner of Roseburg easily outdistanced the pack. "She's easily one of the top two runners in the conference," said Rowan. "She wasn't really tested." Garner notched a time of 20:21, with second-place Gretchen Buettner of Ashland taking second in 22:25. The Grizzlies edged out Grants Pass, 36-39, to take team honors.
