Kenneth Michael Hernandez suffered serious cuts and facial fractures in the two-car wreck Friday night in the construction zone near milepost 15 in Ashland, according to the Oregon State Police. The OSP said blood drawn from Hernandez at the hospital revealed a blood-alcohol level of .259, which is more than three times Oregon’s legal limit. Motorists are considered intoxicated in Oregon if their blood-alcohol level is at .08 percent or higher. He was released Monday from Providence Medford Medical Center, where he was taken after the wreck. The driver of the other car, Albert Oskar Illig, 24, of Medford suffered less serious injuries and was released from Providence over the weekend. Illig was driving his 1988 Ford Fiesta south on I-5 about 8:45 p.m. when he merged into the left lane just before the right lane closed for highway construction, the OSP said. Hernandez was driving his 1989 Honda Accord fast in the left lane and the car crashed into the Fiesta, police said. Both vehicles spun and rolled; both were destroyed. Hernandez was cited on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants, driving while uninsured, fourth-degree assault and second-degree criminal mischief, police said.
