COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL Ducks, Beavers fall in NCAA tourney Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Dec. 13, 2014 at 12:01 AM Posted Dec. 13, 2014 at 12:01 AM » Social News MINNEAPOLIS — Oregon’s volleyball season ended at the hands of North Carolina Friday as the Ducks suffered a four-set defeat in the third round of the NCAA tournament, 25-23,25-22, 23-25, 25-16. The first three sets were about as evenly played as a match can be, with each team being tested by deficits, but both teams responding by pulling close. The Tar Heels jumped on Oregon early in the fourth set, but the numbers told the story of how close the match was with Oregon leading in digs (60-58) and kills (56-55) but trailing slightly in hitting (.229-.205) and blocks (9.0-8.0). “We fought hard, we passed, we played well in the first three sets,” said head coach Jim Moore. “We were outhitting them, statistically, in the first three sets — we kept trying to figure out how we were losing. Statistically we were in front after the first three, but it’s not about the stats, it’s about the points.” BEAVERS FALL: At Ames, Iowa, the Oregon State Volleyball team (21-13) had its historic season come to an end in the regional semifinals, falling to No. 1-ranked Stanford, 25-20, 25-14, 22-25, 25-15. “Stanford is a darn good volleyball team,” said head coach Taras Liskevych. “It’s very difficult to play against them if you can’t take their middles out of the equation, which we had a hard time doing today. We also didn’t pass the ball well enough to set up our middles and that hurt us a little bit. I thought we hung in there in the first set even though we didn’t pass well and we showed our resilience by playing hard in the third set.” The Beavers’ 21 wins are the third most at Oregon State in the NCAA era. The Beavers also earned their first two NCAA tournament wins in school history.
