The Comets grabbed a 2-0 first inning lead but the Calaveras Sliders from California came back to post a 4-2 victory. Andrea Bacon gave the Comets the lead with a two-run double. The Sliders scored two runs in the third and added two more in the sixth inning. Crater pitchers Kelsey Heider and Megan Wasteney allowed eight hits. The Comets, the only Oregon entry in the 58-team tournament, will try to avoid elimination in a game at 3 p.m. today. WESTERN NATIONAL U-18 A TOURNAMENT — At Beaverton, five players from Southern Oregon helped Strictly Softball, a team primarily made up of players from the Portland area, to the championship last weekend. The players from local area schools are: Ashley Bellum from Grants Pass, Amy Mapes from Eagle Point, Jennifer Mendenhall from South Medford, Brandi Paxton from North Medford and Tiffany Ross from Phoenix. Strictly Softball went 9-2 in the tournament and qualified for the national U-18 A tournament next summer in Garland, Texas.
