Next door lived a kind, loving young man who decided I would be a new friend and substitute grandmother. He checked up on me daily, and gave me a big hug each time we met on the patio. We had many long talks on the purpose and meaning of life. I was impressed by his 31-year-old wisdom and his sincere kindness and genuine love. His name was Jerry Wright, and he was one of the 49 brutally murdered on June 12 in an Orlando nightclub. I am grieving for him, for his family and for all those whose family and friends died these senseless deaths. I am also feeling profound regret. Why haven't I spoken out during my long life against hate? It is so easy to not want to get involved or allow fear to prevent us from standing and speaking out. It is so easy to say that hate is none of our business. We can write to our members of Congress demanding sensible gun control. We can donate to worthy causes that sponsor peace. But now is the time to talk face to face to our children when hate appears, to speak to our neighbors and friends when hate is clearly spoken, to speak frankly to organizations that foster hate of any kind and even help people to understand their hidden fears and hates. What have we to lose? I believe that we all have a job to do: to speak to store clerks, telephone friends, doctors, repairmen, servers. We must for the sake of our world stand up and speak out against hate! I am hoping you will join me. Perhaps read my letter to your friends, or your organization. Perhaps write your own letter. Let us all be courageous and speak up for the sake of all our lives. It may sound trite, but love conquers hate! Annette Clinkinbeard, formerly of Medford, lives in Windermere, Fla.
