OUTDOORS NOTEBOOK Seminars will prepare anglers for steelhead seasons Comment By Mark Freeman Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Mark Freeman Mail Tribune Posted Nov. 21, 2014 at 12:01 AM By Mark Freeman Mail Tribune Posted Nov. 21, 2014 at 12:01 AM » Social News The Grants Pass-based Middle Rogue Steelheaders will be at the Sportsman's Warehouse in Medford on Saturday, Nov. 22, to give give two free seminars on how to catch steelhead during the fall seasons. Club member Chuck Closterman says his presentations will focus on catching summer steelhead in the fall and later early-run winter steelhead in the Rogue River. Techniques discussed in the seminars will range from how to target summer steelhead feasting on chinook salmon eggs during the chinook spawn in October, and how to transition to side-drifting eggs and pink rubber worms from November on through the season. His presentations will also touch on fishing plugs from driftboats. They will address gear choices as well, Closterman says. The half-hour presentations are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., with question-and-answer sessions to follow. Sportsman's Warehouse is at 1710 Delta Waters Road off Crater Lake Highway. Gem not the only Hall of Fame retriever here It turns out that Elaine Goodner and her dog, Gem, are not the first pair of handler and retriever from Southern Oregon to earn the title of Master Nation Hall of Fame.  Willie's Ace In The Hole, who went by Jake, received that title back in 2005, earning Bill Mathews the title of first amateur Rogue Valley trainer and handler to win the award. Jake died in 2012, according to family members. The Nov. 14 Oregon Outdoors article on Goodner and Gem misstated that they were the first amateur pair from the Rogue Valley to win hall of fame status in the retrieving world.
