Following this election cycle, as many of us do, it is difficult not to be a rubbernecker at the Republican campaign — one huge spectacle of demagoguery sucking some of us in. I write, however, in response to Tribune contributions regarding Donald Trump (Bunch, Harrop, McKeon) variously supporting or apologizing for Donald Trump. To paraphrase a well-known saying: “All that is necessary for evil to prevail is for good people to say nothing.” Trump has demonstrated that he is a hate-mongering demagogue with no ideas on anything besides blaming "them" for all our purported ills and building walls to keep "them" out. His campaign speeches and debate performances have been filled with racism, sexism, xenophobia, lies glorifying businesses he doesn't own and incitement to violence against protesters. Maybe those in the Republican establishment are no longer representing the hate-mongers to whom they have previously pandered so appallingly. But at last they should be encouraged for trying to stop a hate-monger from becoming their presidential nominee. Paula Perez Costas Ashland Work for the company Pop told me when you work for a fellow, for God sake work for him. Think about what you are doing, pushing a broom and piloting a bus. Concentrate! I've watched men push a broom around, and I mean around debris and rarely look at the broom or the floor. Look at where you've swept. Go back and pick up the specks the broom missed. The same attention to detail applies to every job you do or you will be sweeping the floor at retirement age with nothing to retire on. Danny Thomas told about two men walking track along the railroad. A train stopped and an elderly man leaned out the window and talked to the old man walking tracks like he was an old friend. His young partner said, "That was the chairman of the railroad. How do you know him?" His partner said, "Years ago he and I were walking tracks just like you and I. The difference was I was walking track and he was working for the railroad." Are you still walking track or pushing a broom or working for the company? Hugh Hendrickson Medford No free lunch Kudos to the Medford school board for supporting the upcoming RVTD levy. Since its establishment by the voters some 40 years ago, no additional funding was approved. To its credit, the district has no debt, no PERS exposure and has maximized service within available resources. Acquiring nonprofit status and soliciting foundation support seems to be one possible solution. Unfortunately, there is no free lunch. Alfred Willstatter Ashland Dysfunctional Congress Last Wednesday's paper included a commentary from Leonard Pitts Jr. about Sen. Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader. I totally agree with Pitts. The U.S. Constitution does not give McConnell the authority to choose when he can ignore the Constitution. The president has the responsibility to submit judicial appointments for confirmation. Congress has the responsibility to confirm those appointments. If McConnell refuses to do his job, the people from the great state of Kentucky should vote him out of office. Members of Congress represent the people who voted them into office, not to represent his or her party.
