The 17-year-old boy had been hiking with his family on Saturday along the North Umpqua Trail near Lemolo Lake, located north of Crater Lake and east of Roseburg, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. As he was trying to get a better view of Lemolo Falls, he lost his footing and fell more than 50 feet down the mountain toward the North Umpqua River. "His mom was able to hike to higher ground and get cellular service. She called 911, and rescue units were dispatched," said Douglas County Sheriff's Office Capt. Dwes Hutson. Douglas County Emergency Communications received the emergency call at approximately 3:30 p.m. Douglas County Search and Rescue responded and was assisted by Douglas County Fire District 2. The teen was located approximately a mile and a half from the trailhead down an embankment. Rescuers went down the embankment and packed the teen out along the trail using a stretcher, Hutson said. He was taken to a waiting ambulance and transported by AirLink Critical Care Transport to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, according to the sheriff's office. Information about the extent of his injuries was not immediately available. At the time of his fall, the teen was hiking the 13-mile Dread and Terror Segment of the 79-mile North Umpqua Trail. The segment follows a ridgeline and features several waterfalls, including the 102-foot Lemolo Falls, according to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The Dread and Terror trail segment was given its name in 1908 by two rangers on horseback who dreaded the possibility of fighting wildfires in thorny brush growing in the area.
