Police say they tried to pull over a silver Acura at about 1 p.m. as it traveled south on Highway 62 through Shady Cove. The driver, identified as 48-year-old Erick Robert Decker, took off instead. Deputies pursued him, chasing him for several miles. At one point, deputies say, Decker slowed his speed enough to push a 27-year-old female passenger out of the vehicle near Highway 234. He then sped up again and struck her as he fled. "(He) was clocked going over 100 miles an hour," said Sheriff's Department Sgt. Christine Bronson. "Deputies terminated the pursuit due to the recklessness of his driving." Despite dropping their speeds, deputies continued following to keep him in their sights. Bronson said they saw him turn off at West Rolling Hills Drive near Eagle Point, and eventually found the vehicle abandoned at the end of Dahlia Terrace near Brentwood Drive. "They don't know which way he took off," Bronson said. An investigation showed the car had been stolen from Grants Pass in November, and that its license plates had been taken from another vehicle in Central Point, investigators said. The relationship between the 27-year-old woman and Decker was not available. She was transported to Providence Medford Medical Center for treatment of what Bronson called non-life-threatening injuries, but is no longer listed at the hospital. Court records show Decker was convicted of felon in possession of a firearm charges in July.
