"I really just think we came out flat," said Ashland High's first-year head coach. "I don't know why, but we came out tentative, and we didn't do some of the things that we normally do. I almost think we were questioning ourselves." The Grizzlies never crossed midfield and finished with just 22 yards of total offense in a 26-0 loss to Grants Pass Friday night at Mel Ingram Field. The game wasn't as close as the score. The Cavemen outgained the Grizzlies 209-20 on the ground and 196-2 through the air and finished with 19 first downs to Ashland's two. With starting quarterback Logan Bishop relegated to only defensive work with a bum shoulder, Beau Lewis took over the Grizz offense and completed 1 of 7 passes for two yards and one interception. Advertisement The loss dropped Ashland below .500 for the first time this season at 2-3 overall, with all three losses coming to Southern Oregon Conference teams. The Cavemen improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the SOC. "We have to get better as a football team," Coldiron said. "If we're going to win some games, we have to get better. We didn't play better than last week, and if you don't get better from week to week, people are going to hurt you. We didn't get better from last week, and Grants Pass hurt us." The Cavers needed just four plays on their opening drive to score all the points they would need. Senior tailback Spencer Holland took a handoff and ran 32 yards around the right end virtually untouched, giving GP a 6-0 lead with 10:01 to go in the opening quarter. The Cavemen made it 12-0 on Holland's 5-yard sweep with 5:51 to go in the first half, capping a monster 15-play, 76-yard drive that ate 8 minutes, 11 seconds off the clock. Grants Pass' next series ended with Ashland's best play of the game, a clutch tackle by David Morris that kept Holland from converting a fourth-and- two. The Grizzlies picked up their second and final first down two plays later on a 16-yard run by senior Jess Barr. That concluded Ashland's highlight reel. The Cavers added a 14-yard touchdown pass from junior Nolan Morgan to senior Jake Dastrup with 2:16 left in the third and a 13-yard TD run by Wes Lathen with 8:18 to go in the fourth.
