Chase Mitchell (106 pounds), Henry Cox (120), Caleb Dix (152) and Cole Hornbrook (170) each went undefeated in the tournament to place first for the Black Tornado, while Anthony Neuenschwander (132) finished second. North Medford was potentially well on its way to another top-two finish but defending state champion Wyatt Westfall was injured in his semifinal match against Oregon City’s Lane Marshall and had to default just 56 seconds into the match. Marshall went on to win the 195-pound title with a second-period pin, while Westfall defaulted his way to a fourth-place showing. Overall, North Medford scored 263 points to edge Camas (247.5) for the team title, with South Albany third at 224, North Salem fourth at 193.5 and McMinnville fifth at 173.5. The Black Tornado also got fifth-place efforts from Thomas Hamilton (138) and Josh Robbins (195). Mitchell won his title with a pin in 1 minute, 55 seconds against Sherwood’s Haden Munson, and Cox also secured his title by fall in 2:53 against North Salem’s Brandon Quezada. Dix pinned Hermiston’s Robert Crane in 3:53 to place first, while Hornbrook put Beaverton’s Gordon Smith on his back and pinned him in 3:20 to claim his crown. Neuenschwander lost by technical fall, 16-0, to North Salem’s Ian Carlos in his championship final. Hockey NORTH MEDFORD 11, CRATER 4: Chase Courtney and Josh Wu each tallied three goals to help North Medford pick up where it left off last season with a Southern Oregon League win in the season opener for both teams at The RRRink. Drew Snowden and Jeremy Wu scored two goals apiece for North Medford (1-0), which was undefeated in 2014. Brenden Nordstrom also scored and Evan Riggs made 19 saves in goal for the Black Tornado. Crater got two goals from Gavin Gallagher and one apiece from Steven Renfro and Erich Marschall. The Comets (0-1) utilized two goalies, with Zachary Provencio stopping 24 shots and Garrett Stacey making 13 saves.
