But when a tournament at Aloha didn’t pan out, the Eagles signed on for the talent-laden Mazama Tournament — then came home with the title. The Eagles defeated Lakeview, the top-ranked Class 3A team in Oregon, 25-17, 15-25, 15-13 for the championship. There were three other ranked Class 3A teams in the field: No. 2 Henley, No. 5 Burns and No. 8 Phoenix. "Getting to play Lakeview twice is a great thing," said Eagle Point coach Brianna Groves, whose team also played the Honkers in pool play. "It was a great thing to see because my girls really stepped it up with that level of competition." The Eagles emerged as the top team from their pool, with Lakeview No. 2. The two split their two games, but Eagle Point got top billing in bracket play because of point differential. Henley and Phoenix made the semifinals from the other pool. In the semis, Eagle Point beat Phoenix, 25-16, 25-12 behind Ashley Curtis’ 10 kills and Aubrey Harrington’s 15 assists. In the other semis, Lakeview defeated Henley, 25-14, 25-21. In the finals, Harrington had 12 assists and Jill Shaw 10. Their stalwart distribution helped elevate the play of their teammates. "They (Eagles) haven’t worked together as a team like this since our first couple of conference games," said Groves. "This was something they needed, especially for the second half (of Southern Oregon Conference play)." Eagle Point didn’t miss a serve in the final game, but still had to rally from a 12-8 deficit. Nicole Lucas had seven kills, Curtis six and Jackie Skelton and Harrington five each in the title match. WESTVIEW TOURNAMENT — At Beaverton, Grants Pass won three matches in bracket play en route to a consolation championship at the 12-team tournament. The Cavers beat Forest Grove, 25-16, 26-24 in the consolation finals, with Erin Glovinsky’s 11 kills and Ashley Franco’s five service aces leading the way. Grants Pass downed Grant, 25-19, 25-23 and took out Glencoe, 19-25, 25-11, 15-13 to reach the finals. In pool play, Grants Pass lost to Oregon City, 21-25, 24-26 and fell to Barlow, 13-25, 16-25. A split with Newberg, 25-9, 16-25, sent the Cavers into the consolation bracket. SANTIAM CHRISTIAN TOURNAMENT — At Corvallis, Cascade Christian avenged a pool-play loss to Portland Christian with a victory over the Royals in the championship match of the four-team tournament. The Challengers, a 25-21 loser to Portland Christian in the final game of the round-robin format, won 25-22, 25-19 in the finals to claim the title for the second-straight year. Kayleen Conley had nine digs and Vicki Sherman totaled seven kills in the finals. Janae Johnson and Natalie Dicus led the Challengers with six kills apiece, while Kyleen Johnson had a team-high 23 assists. Cascade Christian beat Salem Academy 25-12 in the opening game then took out host Santiam Christian, 25-17, before losing to Portland Christian in the final game of pool play. The Challengers moved into the title match with another victory over Santiam, 25-22, 25-15. ST. MARY’S 25-25-19-25, ETNA 16-18-25-21 — Amanda Hall did a little bit of everything while helping St. Mary’s to a non-conference win. Hall finished with 10 digs, six assists, two kills and four service aces for the Crusaders (12-0). Teammate Chrissy Seus had 10 kills, while Christina Vaninetti also had 10 kills to go along with eight blocks. Brittany Farrer had 10 blocks, Libby Trum 16 digs, Melissa Anderson 14 digs and Kathryn Zielony 19-of-19 serving.
