Phoenix acquires surplus electrical power generator PHOENIX -- City Hall now has a backup source of electricity thanks to a surplus military generator found by Police Chief Robert Kershaw. "We need to be in a position where we're prepared to react" to any emergency, he said. The only cost of the new 35-kilowatt diesel generator was in picking it up from Stockton, Calif. While there will be some costs to install and operate the generator, it has a $33,000 value said Kershaw. The police department also received three free laptop computers and two free digital cameras. The computers will allow officers to begin their reports in the field, and the cameras will save on the cost of film and developing, said Kershaw. The photos can be directly loaded into a computer file associated with a criminal case. The city is looking for a 25-kilowatt generator to replace one inadequate for the fire department's needs.
