CPR-certified assistant managers Angela Young and Lynda Sorensen performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and used an automated external defibrillator on Jay Latona, 71, who had collapsed after playing handball. Latona had no pulse when they started, but they were able to revive him before paramedics arrived. Jeers — to the incomprehensible reaction of Fox News host Bill O'Reilly to first lady Michelle Obama's remark in her speech to the Democratic National Convention that she wakes up every morning "in a house that was built by slaves." Obama's point — that the Obamas were the first black first family to occupy the White House, and that Hillary Clinton could become the first woman president, showing the greatness of America — was apparently lost on O'Reilly. He somehow felt it necessary to point out that the slaves who did, in fact, provide most of the hard labor of building the presidential mansion "were well fed and had decent lodgings." No doubt every black American feels better now. Cheers — to the Medford City Council for extending open hours at Alba and Pear Blossom parks until midnight to accommodate hordes of Pokémon Go players. The parks previously closed at 10:30, and police frequently had to ask players to leave before they were ready. Council members initially balked at extending the curfew because it hadn't first been considered by the Parks and Recreation Commission, but wisely decided to accommodate what is a wildly popular activity that is not disruptive in any way. As Councilor Clay Bearnson pointed out, having dozens of people in the downtown parks until midnight would act as a crime deterrent. Cheers — to the student loan forgiveness programs that have allowed Jackson County to hire mental health professionals to meet growing demand for services amid a nationwide shortage of qualified applicants. Through a variety of state and federally funded programs, new hires can have significant amounts of student loan debt forgiven in exchange for completing one or more years of service. That's a win for the applicants, who are relieved of a significant repayment burden, and for the county, which is able to fill positions that otherwise would remain vacant.
