Phoenix to choose among write-ins By Tony Boom No names will appear on the ballot, but seven write-in candidates are running to fill four at-large vacancies on the Phoenix City Council in the Nov. 7 election. Three positions are four-year terms. One is for two years remaining on a four-year term. Voters will be asked to fill in one name for the two-year seat and three names for four-year seats. Current City Councilwoman Diana Rasmussen, whose term is expiring, is seeking election to the two-year position. Other candidates are Harold E. Burks, Curtis P. Georgeson, Vanitia Hertager, David S. Johnson, Dorothy Rachor and Daniel Sauro. Burks , 69, rallied neighbors in September in an effort to curtail firing of a propane cannon which a resident just outside city limits used to keep rodents away from her pigs. Burks has resided in Phoenix for 16 years. He is a retired masonry contractor. He also served as a firefighter while in the Air Force for eight years. Johnson , 31, has lived in Phoenix for three years and in the Rogue Valley since 1992. He graduated from Southern Oregon University this year with a bachelor�s degree in international studies. At SOU he served as a senator in student government for one year. He was also president of the university�s Model United Nations. Johnson is now a personal banking officer with Wells Fargo Bank in Medford. Georgeson , 66, has lived in Phoenix since July 1998. He was mayor of Waverly, Neb., for six years. He also served on Waverly�s city council four years and on the planning commission four years. Georgeson worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in Lincoln, Neb., for 31 years. He has a bachelor�s degree in urban planning from the University of Nebraska. Hertager , 40, has lived in Phoenix for 13 years. She is a Phoenix Chamber of Commerce board member. She works as a personal property appraiser. Rachor , 75, announced her write-in candidacy in August. Rachor has lived in Phoenix for 10 years. Her prior leadership experience includes service on the city�s planning commission, the Jackson County Airport Advisory Committee and the South Umpqua School Board in Douglas County. She is a nationally certified building designer who worked in construction. Rasmussen , 54, has served four years on the council. She also served on the city�s planning commission and worked for the city planner. A home interior designer, Rasmussen also has been an educator and an activities director for a senior home. She has a master�s degree in humanities and fine arts from SOU. Sauro , 71, has lived in Phoenix for one year. He previously lived in Grants Pass. He formerly worked in management for Hughes Aircraft Co. and Safeway. He also owned a real estate company in Santa Barbara, Calif.
