Mail Tribune wins 10 ONPA awards WELCHES - The Mail Tribune captured 10 awards - including first places for best sports photo, best photo essay and educational coverage - in the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association's 2001 Better Newspaper Contest. The awards were announced Friday during the association's annual summer publishers convention at The Resort at The Mountain. Photographer Drew Fleming won first place for his photo "Reason to rejoice" depicting North Medford High School baseball players mobbing teammate Phil Ouellette after he had scored in a game that gave his team the 2000 Southern Oregon Conference championship. Fleming also took second place for his photo following a fatal accident involving a man in a wheelchair hit by a pickup truck. Photographer Jim Craven won first place for his photo essay entitled "Black Light," which caught the essence of last year's Jackson County Fair, from ice cream, roller-coaster rides and walking through misters to taking part in 4H competition and judging a tractor driving contest. Former Mail Tribune city editor Bill Manny, now a news editor at the Idaho Statesman in Boise, took first place for his piece about parents getting a first-hand taste of Certificate of Initial Mastery tests fifth-graders are taking. The Mail Tribune produced six third places: best page one design by Mark Medlin; best graphics by Mary Hills; best lifestyle coverage by Bill Kettler for "A death in the family," a series about assisted suicide; best feature photo, of the North Medford High School marching band serenading a woman on her 45th birthday; best spot news coverage, by JoNel Aleccia about a Jackson County caseworker charged with sexually abusing several developmentally disabled young men in his care; and best editorial page. The Mail Tribune competed against The Oregonian, the Register-Guard, the Statesman Journal of Salem and The Bulletin of Bend in Division A of the contest, for daily newspapers with a circulation of 25,000 or more. General excellence award winners for daily newspapers were: The Oregonian, East Oregonian of Pendleton (10,001-25,000) and The Daily Astorian (10,000 and less). The Rogue River Press topped weeklies with circulation of 2,500 or less. Three Southern Oregon newspapers in the 10,000-25,000 category received ONPA awards. The News-Review of Roseburg captured 15 awards, including firsts for page one design, inside page design, educational coverage, Sunday sports editions, best feature photo, best photo essay, spot news coverage and enterprise reporting. The Grants Pass Daily Courier won eight awards, including first place for best lifestyle coverage. The Herald and News of Klamath Falls claimed seven awards, including firsts in best sports page, best sports photo and best news photo.
