Sean Isaac Brewer, 34, of the 2700 block of Roberts Road, was sentenced to a year and a half in prison Friday after he pleaded guilty to seven felony counts of first-degree encouraging child sexual abuse, admitting he'd saved multiple videos and pictures of children being sexually abused that were downloaded between April 2005 and September 2008. Brewer wept bitterly at the sentence, requiring his lawyer, Justin Rosas, to escort Brewer out of the courtroom as Rosas and his parents attempted to console him. Rosas had sought leniency from Jackson County Circuit Judge Lorenzo Mejia, asking for probation and treatment mandates with the penalty of a long prison sentence if he failed to comply. "I am truly sorry for what I did. I know what I did was wrong," Brewer said after entering his plea. "I promise if you give me a chance I will not be before you again." Although Mejia described Brewer as a "very fragile person in a lot of ways," Mejia said he was "very affected" to learn Brewer had kept more than 300 videos and dozens of photographs of children being sexually exploited. "You kept them after you'd been discovered the first time," Mejia said, but did not elaborate. The plea agreement dismissed seven additional felony charges of second-degree encouraging child sexual abuse for accessing, but not possessing, six videos of children being victimized in January 2013. Deputy District Attorney Zori Cook had sought a two-year prison sentence. She said Brewer had 330 videos and 42 photographs stored on a one-terabyte external hard drive. "It was not an accidental download once or twice," Cook said. Cook said the files were stored in classified folders designed to avoid detection, describing the technical sophistication of his crimes as "far above normal." Members of the Southern Oregon High Tech Crimes Task Force briefed Mejia in his chambers for the content of the videos Brewer admitted he possessed. Cook said child pornography is not a victimless crime. "These children are victims. They will continue to be victims," Cook said. Rosas said Brewer has confessed and cooperated, and had sought to put his crime behind him. "This is obviously an addiction and a compulsion," Rosas said, arguing that Brewer would be successful in sex offender treatment. "He already has an understanding that this is wrong." In arguing for probation, Rosas said Brewer lacks the mind-set for prison and jail, and has suffered from "substantial" anxiety and depression since his arrest. Brewer has no prior charges or convictions other than a 2007 speeding ticket, court records show. His only mention in Mail Tribune archives was on the 2004 Rogue Community College honor roll. Rosas described Brewer as a musician who's developing a metronome app. Mejia sentenced Brewer to 18 months' prison and 10 years' post-prison supervision.
