Michael Harvie Eary, 25, of the 300 block of Latigo Lane in Central Point, was sentenced Friday to three years in prison after entering guilty pleas in seven cases. Charges from yet more cases were not filed as part of a plea agreement. Noting the difficulties in keeping the paperwork straight, Jackson County Circuit Judge Lorenzo Mejia told Eary, "That's the swath of criminal conduct you've bestowed on our community." Eary pleaded guilty to charges that included first-degree burglary, second-degree burglary, two counts of first-degree theft, three counts of second-degree theft, possession of heroin, second-degree forgery and two counts of unlawful entry into a motor vehicle. An admitted drug addict, the 240-pound, 6-foot-4-inch Eary went to a transient woman's Medford motel room in March. The woman owed him money for drugs she had bought, according to an affidavit. "He came and threatened her with a Taser and told her he wanted his money," said Jackson County Deputy District Attorney David Orr.  When the woman couldn't pay, Eary and his accomplices stole everything the woman owned in the motel room, Orr said. In another case, a family friend said she had to start sleeping with a loaded gun after Eary stole a purse from her home that included keys and $900 she had received as a Christmas bonus at work. The friend, who had known Eary since he was a boy, said he once was a promising youth who was active in 4-H and Future Farmers of America before he began using drugs. She said he gained the trust of the agricultural community in Eagle Point and Shady Cove, and then victimized people. Eary stole a check for $400 from his cousin's welding business and cashed it. The cousin said the incoming check, which had been sent by a customer as payment for welding work, was needed to pay for groceries for his wife and two young sons. Eary also stole from his grandparents. His mother, who said she had to install a security system at her home, said she was glad her son had been jailed. She said she had been living in fear of a phone call notifying her that her son had died of a heroin overdose or been shot by someone he was trying to rob. Orr said Eary also targeted hikers parked at local trailheads. He would break into their vehicles and steal their possessions. "As a citizen, it's troubling to me," Orr said. "I like to hike. Thousands of people use trails and have to worry about going there and parking because of people like Mr. Eary." In another case, Eary sold stolen gold teeth and jewelry to a gold shop in Eagle Point. Eary said he couldn't explain why he had turned to a life of drugs and crime. He said when he was high on drugs, he didn't think about the consequences of his actions. He apologized to friends and relatives in court whom he had victimized. Eary attempted Jackson County Circuit Court's drug treatment court program in 2012, which seeks to help drug addicts. However, he failed to comply with the program and served eight months in prison for crimes he previously had committed, according to court officials and documents.
