There are big bird nests in a couple of these trees. The nests are obvious before the leaves come in, but I hadn’t seen them before. Do you know if they are active, and what kind of birds they are? — Shirley W., Grants Pass Chances are they are hawks or owls, Shirley. There are lots of red-tailed hawks in that area. These large, soaring raptors are known for the big nests they build. Owls sometimes move into such nests when they can get away with it. Many crows live in the area, and also build large nests. Acorn woodpeckers live in oak groves, but they are cavity nesters. If the trees were on the east side of the Cascades, magpies would be another candidate. While our resident Since You Asked bird guy would gladly sit out there for days to watch the nests, our resident efficiency expert would never go for it. Your best bet is to take your binoculars or spotting scope and a sandwich. Hey, it’s nice work. Send questions to "Since You Asked," Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O.
