Raiders qualify two more for the nationals EUGENE - Southern Oregon University ran its individual track and field qualifiers for the NAIA National Championships to 11 by qualifying two more athletes at the Oregon Twilight Invitational at Hayward Field Saturday. Senior Rachael Childers and sophomore Sean Peterson punched their ticket to the 51st annual national meet May 23-25 at Olathe, Kan., with peak performances at the Eugene meet. Childers broke her own school record and qualified for nationals with a 153-foot, 8-inch toss in the hammer throw. The mark placed Childers third in the meet. It broke her previous mark of 146-4 of this year. Peterson ran a personal best time of 3:53.09 in the 1,500 to advance to the national meet. Peterson placed fifth at the twilight event. "You always like to see people do their best near the end of the season," Southern Oregon coach Mike Jones said, "and they did that today." Senior Tiwana Merritt chalked up victories in the 200 and 400 (56.82). She posted a season-best time of 25.30 in the 200. Richard Bailey provided the Raiders their other first place with a personal-best throw in the discus of 162-3. Nicole Robertson was second in the shot put (40-10) and fourth in the discus with a season-best 147-11. Justin Bennett set a personal record by placing fourth in the hammer throw (165-10). Other Southern Oregon placers were Kena Page in the long jump (third, 18-11/4) and Megan Heuberger in the 400 hurdles (fourth, 1:04.37).
