Cascade advances to state tournament CENTRAL POINT � The state playoff drought finally ended Thursday for the Cascade Christian volleyball team. The Challengers took out Lost River, 15-0, 15-8, in an SCL playoff game at Scenic Middle School to assure themselves a trip to the state playoff berth for the first time in school history. "The key for us tonight was our blocking and serving," said third-year Cascade Christian coach Susan Gmur. "Kelly (Clarke) also got us off to a great start." Cascade Christian visits St. Mary�s at 2 p.m. on Saturday in a seeding game. The winner plays at 1 p.m. next Friday at the fairgrounds in Eugene while the No. 2 seed starts at 8 p.m. The Challengers (19-5, 9-3 SCL) jumped on the back of Clarke, the lone senior, to take Game 1. Clarke served out the first 10 points, five of them aces, and were never threatened in the shutout win. The tandem of Amy Roseberg and Kristin Salamone combined for six blocks while Whitney Brookins turned in a stellar all-around effort. "Whitney did an incredible job of setting for us today," said Gmur. "She�s been our only setter all year long and has been outstanding for us." Gmur has guided the Challengers to the league playoffs in each year she�s been at the helm but has never been able to crack into the state tournament.
