AHS debater makes an even bigger mark Ashland High School senior Mat Marr continued a series of debate victories this week when he reached the final round at a Berkeley, Calif., tournament. The invitational is the largest speech and debate tournament in the nation. Marr placed second among 249 competitors in Lincoln Douglas debate. "I can't think of two better performances by an AHS student than what Mat did at Pinecrest and Berkeley," said debate coach John Tredway. "He has found his event in Lincoln Douglas debate and we're very proud of his achievements." Last month, Marr took top honors in Lincoln Douglas debate at the Pinecrest invitational in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. That win, as well as his success this week, qualifies Marr for a spot at the Tournament of Champions at the University of Kentucky in April. Marr is the first student in Ashland High School history to earn two bids to the Tournament of Champions. Three other Ashland students also earned a bid to the event as a result of finishing in the top 16 of their debate events. Junior Poppy Alexander tied for fifth place in Lincoln Douglas debate.
