Here are the five worst by number of people killed. (And just to be clear, the Sabra and Blue Bell recalls aren’t associated with any deaths.) Sanjay Acharya/Wikimedia 2008 salmonella outbreak in peanuts , 9 deaths: The outbreak also became one of the largest food recalls in U.S. history, according to the New York Times, and it brought down the company responsible - the Peanut Corporation of America. Stefan Kuhn/Wikimedia 1985 salmonella outbreak in milk , 9 deaths: This Midwest outbreak affected 16,284 people, according to the FDA. The tainted milk came from Hillfarm Dairy in Melrose Park, Illinois. Chensiyuan/Wikimedia 1998 listeria outbreak in cold cuts, hot dogs , 21 deaths: Cold cuts and hot dogs from Bil Mar Foods tainted with listeria only hospitalized 101 people, according to http://www.outbreakdatabase.com/ , but 21 died. Wikimedia 2011 listeria outbreak in cantaloupes , 30 deaths: Bad cantaloupe from Jensen Farms in Holly, Colorado, sickened 147 people in 28 states, according to the CDC, and 30 people died.
