North nets sweep Mail Tribune/Roy Musitelli The North Medford softball team small-balled their way to a pair of wins to open the season on Monday in the North Medford Invitational at Fagone Field. The Black Tornado took advantage of six errors and five walks to go along with just four hits during a 7-2 win over South Albany, then slipped past Sprague 3-2. "You know, it's real nice to get a couple of wins," said North coach Larry Binney. "We did a good job of bunting today, and moving the runners along." North jumped to a 2-1 lead against Sprague after five innings but the Olympians rallied to tie it in the sixth, forcing an international tiebreaker rule in extra innings. In the top half of the eighth, Kendra Strahm started at second and went to third on a wild pitch. One out later, Deni Rowley laid down a suicide squeeze bunt to score Strahm with the eventual game-winning run. Beth Morrill led an eight-hit North Medford attack with three. Krystal Young picked up the win, striking out five while giving up just three hits. Keri Sevano notched the win against South Albany as the Black Tornado (2-0) scored in every inning. South Medford dropped two close games, both 1-0 losses to Tigard and Barlow.
