The senior quarterback turned in one of the strongest performances of his career to lead the Beavers to a 27-17 upset of the Huskies. He completed 14-of-19 passes for 308 yards and a touchdown. It marked the first time he had thrown for over 300 yards in a game this season. "I think he did a great job," said OSU coach Mike Riley. "Overall, he just played very, very solid. I thought his poise was great; he seemed to make good decisions and really competed." Moore also completed the longest pass of his career in the third quarter. He found Sammie Stroughter wide-open for an 80-yard touchdown. His previous best had been a 63-yard pass to Mike Hass last season against Washington State. "It was a cover zero, no safeties," noted Moore of the Huskies' defense on the play. "They pretty much brought everybody. I knew Sammie was going to be wide open, so I took it and let it go and Sammie did a good job with his open-field running." The redshirt freshman, whose popularity has soared in recent weeks due to Moore's poor play, had an afternoon to forget. He entered the game with 12:08 left in the second quarter and the Beavers went three and out. On the first play of his second series, he threw a pass that was easily picked off by Husky linebacker Scott White. UW scored two plays later, tying the score at 10. "I just didn't see that (line)backer," Canfield said. "I would love to have that one back, but the team came back and got a win, so that's all that matters." Canfield finished 0-for-2 passing and didn't play again after that series. u FOR THE SECOND straight Saturday, Stroughter had a standout game. Against Washington State, he had six receptions for 124 yards, both career-highs. He bested them against UW with 223 yards on seven catches. The 80-yard touchdown pass he caught from Moore in the third quarter was also a career-long. "We can't be satisfied," Stroughter said. "We have to pretend like we lost this game, go back to the drawing board and see what we did wrong. Then we'll come back and get ready for Arizona. This is a great coaching staff that puts all of us in position to make plays." U JUNIOR LINEBACKER Derrick Doggett entered Saturday's game determined to prove himself. All week, he heard how the Beavers wouldn't be able to contain UW quarterback Isaiah Stanback. But after recording 10 total tackles, including two for loss and a sack, Doggett had the final word. "I had seen the papers, and how he was the fastest guy on the field, faster than me," Doggett said. "I felt disrespected, so this game I just decided to go out there and show my speed." Stanback had a few big runs against the Beaver defense, but for the most part, he was shut down. He finished with 11 yards rushing and was sacked three times. He did, however, score on touchdown runs of 3 and 4 yards. "We focused on angles all week, because he's a fast guy and he can get to the edge," said OSU defensive end Jeff Van Orsow. "So those angles on defense were instrumental for us." u KICKER ALEXIS SERNA enjoyed another successful game at Husky Stadium. He made both of his field goal attempts, from 28 and 26 yards. In three games against UW, he is a perfect 13-of-13 on field-goal tries. Last season in Seattle, Serna tied a Pac-10 record with six field goals and provided all of OSU's offense in its 18-10 win. RUNNING BACK Yvenson Bernard, who was held to 91 yards on 17 carries by the Cougars last Saturday, had more room to run against the Huskies. He finished with 144 yards on 29 carries and two touchdowns. But most impressive was his five yards per carry average. His longest run of the afternoon was 16 yards. "Yvenson Bernard is a workhorse," Stroughter said. "We lost our identity a little bit during the past couple games. We just wanted to go back to the idea of Oregon State football. We have a great offensive line and a great group of receivers that block downfield." Advertisement Copyright © 1997-2006 Mail Tribune, Inc. All rights reserved.
