He was born May 1, 1927 in Sacramento, California, the first of three children of Albert Bonnheim Winkelman and Emma Marie Leslie Winkelman. From age ten, he was raised by his paternal grandparents. Mel graduated from Sacramento Senior High School in 1945 where he was an outstanding basketball and baseball player. He was recruited by UCLA to play basketball, but broke his ankle playing an exhibition game after which his scholarship was revoked. He continued his education at Sacramento State receiving his degree in 1950. He served in the United States Navy from 1945 through 1948. He was recalled to active duty from the United States Naval Reserve to serve in the Korean War 1951 through 1953, and honorably discharged thereafter. Beginning in 1953 Mel began his career with Standard Oil of California as an accounting clerk and rose steadily through the company to become marketing representative, assistant district manager, then wholesale specialist in 1966. He was promoted to District Sales Manager with Chevron USA in 1987 and relocated to Bellingham, Washington. From 1968 to 1970 he was the Wholesale Marketing Manager for Chevron USA, Latin America. Tired of extensive work travel, he requested a different position in the company. Asked by the Company President where he would like to go, Mel replied, "Medford, Oregon" because the Rogue Valley Country Club has a wonderful golf course. Mel then moved his family to Medford in 1970 where he owned Winkelman Oil Company, retiring in 1989. Upon his move to Medford he also began a 33-year career of public service some of which were little league coach, Medford 549C Budget Committee, Medford Architectural Review Committee, Rogue Valley Country Club (RVCC) Board member, chairman two years of St. Mary’s High School Board, Medford City Council, KSYS Board, and ten years on the Medford Water Commission. He was also a long-time member of the RVCC serving as club president twice. He was an avid golfer from a young age when he played with his grandfather Winkelman. He enjoyed the game until recent years when his health no longer allowed him to play. He especially enjoyed many years of competing in the Southern Oregon Golf Tournament held each Labor Day weekend. His favorite time on the golf course was playing with his regular foursome. Mel married Irene June 18, 1949. They later divorced. He married Viva September 8, 1978 and they delighted in each other's company for almost 38 years. He is remembered with love by his devoted wife, Viva; daughter, Lisa (John) Bruce of Medford; son, Marc (Jill) of Chandler, Arizona; four grandchildren, Katie and Dan Bruce (for whom he is “Grandfather number three"), Rachel (Nathan) Butler, and Christine Winkelman. He is also survived by his brother, Leslie. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Noretta. A private committal will be held for the family at Eagle Point National Cemetery. A celebration of Mel’s life will be held Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Medford, Oregon. Memorial gifts in Mel’s memory may be made to ACCESS (3630 Aviation Way, Medford, OR 97504), Dogs for the Deaf (10175 Wheeler Road, Central Point, OR 97502), or the Southern Oregon Humane Society (2910 Table Rock Road, Medford, OR 97501). The family gives heartfelt thanks to the caring staff of Asante Hospice who so kindly and lovingly guided us through his illness as well as All Care In Home Support Services who provided such extraordinary caregivers.
