Hoke, manager of the Hoke Cannery, reports that the Rogue River valley acreage in tomatoes and loganberries will be trebled the coming season. Where last year growers had to be begged to plant tomatoes and loganberries, they are now unsolicited announcing their intention of engaging in the culture of the two staples. In view of the fact that the Hoke cannery was pronounced a fizzle before it started by the leading wailers of the city, this showing is of especial interest. One of those who is impressed with the possibilities of loganberries is D. Rosenberg, owner of a large stock ranch near Rogue River. Mr. Rosenberg investigated the growing of loganberries in the Willamette valley, after a talk with Mr. hoke, and has decided to plant a large tract. The growing and canning of loganberries, in the opinion of Mr. Hoke, is one of the great industries of Oregon. In the east and middle west, the Oregon loganberry is in high demand. Owing to the indifference of farmers, the demand cannot be supplied. Mr. Hoke announces that he will handle all loganberries grown in the valley. The tomato output this year will also show the result of last year's experience. Last year many just dabbled in this branch. They received good returns from their crops, and now will increase their acreage. The bean and pea crop will also show a substantial increase.   Medford merchants, as an inducement to the landowners of the Applegate to grow sugar beets, and as a lever to hit the transportation problem from that fertile, partially irrigated section, have agreed to pay 25 cents a ton upon the freight charges from that section entailed in shipping beets to the factory. This means that if 4,000 tons of beets were raised in the Applegate district, the merchants of Medford would pay $1,000 of the freight charges. A committee meeting with the farmers and landowners of that section is being arranged, when the proposition will be put in definite form. Owing to the distance from market, the Applegate has not been seriously invaded by the beet committee, but just around the edges Tuesday, 200 acres were signed by in that section, and there is strong sentiment in favor of growing sugar beets.
