People who would be affected by a Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake, which includes those in Southern Oregon, are encouraged to try out their kits in a coordinated camping event in their own yards or at a campground. The Red Cross is calling the event "Camp Prepare!" An earthquake measuring as much as 9.0 is expected to one day hit the Pacific Northwest. Such earthquakes hit the region every 300 to 500 years, and the last one occurred in 1700. The Red Cross recommends that people assemble survival kits and have them on hand. Prepare a personal kit with supplies for one person for three days in a bag or backpack for home, in the car and at work. Car kits should include booster cables, emergency flares, a distress sign and a toolkit. Keep a family kit, with supplies for two weeks, in a sturdy container at home. Also, assemble a by-the-bed kit with a flashlight, spare glasses and sturdy shoes to walk across debris if an emergency happens at night. Those camping out Saturday probably won't need to use some items that the Red Cross recommends be assembled for disaster preparedness, such as a garden hose with a shut-off nozzle for fighting fires, a crescent wrench located near a natural gas shut-off valve and tools such as an ax, shovel, pry bar, hammer, pliers, multi-purpose tool and work gloves. Duct tape, plastic sheeting and 50 feet of half-inch nylon rope are also on the list. People should make copies of important documents and prepare a list of family contact information. Families should make an emergency plan for disasters so that each person knows where to go or who to contact if they are separated when a disaster strikes. Emergency officials encourage designating a person outside of the region, in an area unlikely to be affected, as an emergency contact. That way, people can check in with someone even if they can't connect directly. To register as an official participant of Camp Prepare!, see the website www.redcross.org/CampPrepare2016 . People are encouraged to share their experience on social media, such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, using the hashtag #CampPrepare.
