Stewart in his letter to the editor of July 27 paints a picture of doom and gloom to business in Oregon. Pretty much the same picture painted a few years back when the Democrats/progressives voted to change Oregon's business tax from the lowest in the nation to just one of the lowest, in addition to a slight increase in taxation to high income earners. Interesting that the unemployment rate today is now nearly half of what it was then. Apparently our businesses did not move to California, Nevada and Washington as was predicted. Looks like we Oregonians made the correct decision. Dave van de Velde Phoenix Adopt efficiencies Last year I did a blood draw at a local lab. Paperwork took 20 minutes, and the blood draw took two minutes. Your article “All Care boosts health care training program” stated providers are looking for more than 500 medical secretaries in our region. Several years ago I testified before Senator Bates in health care reform hearings in Medford. I testified that with a national health care card, claims were processed in five working days. Senator Bates referred to that system as “single swipe.” Even though single swipe allows physician office operations in France to operate with no clerks whatsoever and despite the fact I have reported these efficiencies to all of our senators and representatives, there is no sign that single swipe will be adopted. The article “Health care spending to accelerate,” also on July 29, stated in the next several years health care costs will inflate 50 percent faster than the general inflation rate. We continue to tell our Medicaid people that “overutilization” is the problem, but even well-known efficiencies are never adopted, and our medical claims system is in chaos. A man I met from Africa once told me: “There is great profit in chaos.” Mark Soderstrom Phoenix God help us In the 90s or early 2000s there was a debate on the floor of the U.S. Senate about partial birth abortion. The uproar that occurred was of having to view the graphic illustrations of the procedure. Not the procedure itself, mind you, but having to look at it — it was considered gruesome to watch. Well, we have come a long way now. We are now trafficking in the body parts of human beings and converse in callous words about the profits. And according to Nancy Pelosi the crime is not in what was uncovered in the recent Planned Parenthood videos but rather in the fact that the videos were taken. As we descend into more and more chaos, we are “progressing” into oblivion. God help us all. Sanda Collegio Central Point Trickle-down works Regarding Marie Arvette's letter of July 29, she states that the trickle-down theory of economics has been thoroughly discredited. Most people, liberal and conservative, agree that Ronald Reagan was a very successful president. His trickle-down policies created a very strong economy. Bill Clinton, a favorite of the left, facing a Republican Congress in his second term, resorted to trickle-down policies of cutting taxes and government spending and his economy boomed. George Bush, with his Bush tax cuts, had a very good economy until the housing bubble burst. The housing bubble was created by the likes of Barney Frank and his oversight of Fannie and Freddie and their acceptance of all the unsecured loans. That covers the '80sand '90s and through 2008. Before that was Jimmy Carter, certainly not a trickle-down follower. Now we have the worst recovery of a recession in our history. President Obama has instituted more regulations than any president in history and has increased the national debt more than all presidents combined. Compare his GDP to the previously mentioned presidents and tell me what policies work.
