Roseburg in command after first round The Indians hold a 53-stroke lead after the first round of the SOC district girls tournament The Southern Oregon Conference district girls golf tournament played pretty much to form during the first round of the two-day event Thursday at Rogue Valley Country Club. Roseburg, the conference leader after the five counting regular season matches, posted a 371 team total and holds a 53-stroke lead over second-place Ashland (424). Roseburg senior Jennifer Gaston shot the low round of 84 on the par-72 layout. "She's (Gaston) been really playing her best golf late in the season," North Medford coach Tim Sam said. "She'll be tough to catch." Ashland freshman Stephanie Johns is second with an 88 and Roseburg's Melissa Carl is third in the individual standings at 90. Johns made the turn at 42, then shot a 46 on the back nine. "She (Johns) played pretty solid on the front, but got in some trouble on the back side," said Sam. "She doesn't make a lot of mistakes. She hits the ball strong and is very focused." The low team after the five regular season matches and the two more district rounds receives one of two SOC spots at the state tournament. The conference's second representative at the state tournament is the winner of the two-day district or the second team at district if the same school wins district and is also the low team. The top five individuals advance to the state meet May 13-14 at Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis. Ashland is in good position to garner the No. 2 conference spot to state. The Grizzlies hold a 19-stroke lead over third-place North Medford (443). The top five schools after the five regular-season matches placed in the same order Thursday. North Medford freshman Kacie Kinney positioned herself well for a trip to state after the first day of district. Kinney is tied for fourth with Elaina Graham of Eagle Point with a 94. Other golfers in strong contention for a state berth are Ashland's Bianca Montagnino (97), Ally Codington of Grants Pass and Kelly O'Brien of Roseburg at 98. Roseburg's Heather Warner, the only other golfer to break 100, is in ninth at 99. The district tournament resumes at noon today at RVCC.
