An Oregon State Police trooper saw Jeffrey George Zech, 37, and his girlfriend Amy Rachelle Maillet, 26, arguing in a vehicle Wednesday while traveling along Interstate 5 near Central Point, Jackson County sheriff’s Detective Colin Fagan said. The trooper stopped their vehicle, and was subsequently joined at the scene by Fagan and Medford police Detective Tony Young. After being interviewed by detectives, Maillet was cited for theft and released. Zech was lodged late Wednesday in the Jackson County Jail on five counts of first-degree theft, two counts of aggravated first-degree theft, two counts of unlawful use of a vehicle, first-degree burglary, identity theft, hit-and-run driving, criminal trespass and first-degree criminal mischief. He was being held on $275,000 bail. Zech and Maillet were featured in a Crime Stoppers article that ran in Sunday’s Mail Tribune. Both have previously spent time in prison . Fagan said Zech has been arrested a total of 49 times in Oregon since 1987, and is suspected of committing several residential burglaries in Jackson County during the past few months. Advertisement "He is a career criminal," Fagan said of Zech. During the Dec. 10 burglary in the 700 block of Netherlands Road near Trail, Zech and Maillet are suspected of taking antiques, sculptures and other items from a guest home and later selling some of them in Medford, Fagan said. Detectives on Wednesday recovered several items they believe were stolen by Zech at a home on Orchard Home Drive in Medford, Fagan said.
