When President Obama took office in 2008 it was about $10 trillion, and it is believed that when he leaves office, it will be about $20 trillion. As a senator in 2006, Obama said, "increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally." Washington is shifting the burden of bad debt onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. Obama has added massive amounts to this debt and has not seemed overly concerned about it. This debt increases at about $100 million every hour, 24/7. Our next president must make this a priority. Hillary Clinton has mentioned that she will continue the Obama policies, so it looks like there will be no change with this problem if she is elected. Gordon DeVos Medford Banned books Since when has Shakespeare been appointed guardian of window displays? In the 1960s the Oregon Shakespeare Festival was staunchly supported by a great number of volunteers from the Ashland community and surrounds. The success of the festival was achieved on the backs of those loyal advocates. Recent decades have seen Shakespeare evolve from rich enactments featuring authentic language and costuming to a wide variety of productions. Some of these productions are questionable as to being fit for younger people, school groups in particular. Perhaps the elites in management imagine themselves being on "the cutting edge." Others see this trend as a slippery slope unworthy of support. When Shakespeare management, so enamored of itself that a children's book character from India is purported to be an affront to African American sensibilities, we can see how such people operate. Their bullying, snobbish action resulting in the closure of a book store demonstrates how Shakespeare rewards the community and the volunteerism that built it. Don Skillman Talent Kids tell the story Mahatma Gandhi said that you can judge the greatness of a nation by the way it treats its animals. Hillary Clinton's daughter, Chelsea, decided on her own to stop eating meat when she was just a teenager. She wanted to be kind to animals. Donald Trump's sons, Eric and Donald Jr., kill exotic animals for the thrill of it. They posted pictures of themselves with the dead bodies on Twitter, as a way of bragging. What kind of parent would produce a daughter who would be so compassionate? And what kind of parent would produce sons who would be so cruel? If Gandhi were still alive, I think he'd agree with me: You can usually judge the quality of presidential candidates by the way their kids turned out.
