I’m hearing it with increasing frequency (it’s bordering on clich�) but can’t find out where it came from. Any ideas? — Scott S., Medford Winston Churchill used the phrase you’re thinking of in a 1939 radio address to the British people, Scott. You’ll recall that in that year Hitler and Stalin signed a mutual non- aggression pact that cleared the way for Hitler to take over Eastern Europe. "I cannot forecast to you the action of Russia," Churchill said. "That is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma, but perhaps there is a key. That key is Russian national interest." Advertisement Hitler, of course, would double-cross Stalin and invade the Soviet Union. And Churchill, despite a war-time alliance with the Soviets, would never trust Stalin.
