Eric One Ziegler, 31, was arraigned Wednesday in Umatilla County Circuit Court on six counts of felony identity theft. A grand jury indicted him on the charges Tuesday, said Gretchen Ladd, a Umatilla County deputy district attorney. While incarcerated at Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution in Pendleton, Ziegler allegedly gleaned personal information of previous victims from police reports provided to him legally by a probation officer. He used the information to establish fraudulent telephone accounts in the names of several Jackson County residents, sheriff’s Detective Colin Fagan said. Telephone service was set up at the homes of Ziegler’s friends and relatives, Fagan said. Ziegler allegedly placed collect calls to the accounts from prison and also gave other prisoners access to the telephone numbers. Ziegler was sentenced to more than six years in prison last year after pleading guilty in Jackson County Circuit Court to a dozen felony charges including burglary, aggravated theft and identity theft. Investigators believe he broke into at least 60 vehicles in the Rogue Valley during late 2003 and early 2004. Ziegler used stolen checks, credit cards and other forms of victims’ identification to steal more than $100,000 from them, police said. Ziegler was later ordered to serve another two years and two months in prison after pleading guilty to two additional counts of identity theft in Jackson County. He is now being held in the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem, said Perrin Damon of the state Department of Corrections.
