Ross helps Phoenix reel in victory TALENT - Tiffany Ross helped herself Tuesday as the Phoenix High softball team remained unbeaten in Skyline Conference play. Ross tossed a complete-game, five-hitter and went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs to lead the Pirates to a 7-3 win over Lakeview. Christina Saldivar added two hits, three RBIs and three runs. Her two-run triple in the first inning put Phoenix ahead to stay. Kelsey Russell belted a two-run double off the left-field wall to bring home two more runs in the third as the Pirates extended the lead to 5-0. "We hit the ball really hard today," said Phoenix coach Bill Shearin. "We had three shots off the wall. "Tiffany had a real good day. She hasn't walked a batter in four games." Phoenix next travels to play Henley, which is 2-2 in conference play, Friday for a doubleheader. "Henley has always been on top of the league for a good reason," said Shearin. "They are a very solid team. We're looking forward to playing them and we're anxious to see how we measure up." ILLINOIS VALLEY 5, HIDDEN VALLEY 4 - At Cave Junction, Sara Shinerock's one-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Sydney Derda with the winning run. Hidden Valley (1-9, 0-6 Skyline) capitalized on four Illinois Valley errors that led to two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead. Tiphanie Pope began the seventh-inning rally for the Cougars with a one-out single. Derda followed with an RBI double and went to third on runner interference on the play. Then Shinerock delivered the winning hit. Cougar pitcher Kim Hamilton struck out eight in a complete- game victory. Hamilton added a solo home run in the first inning and a single. Skyline Baseball PHOENIX 10, LAKEVIEW 0 - At Lakeview, Brady Rhodes pitched a two-hit shutout and Kevin Hudnall and Jason Wolford contributed three hits each as Phoenix won its fourth straight conference game. The Pirates (4-6, 4-2 Skyline) backed up Rhodes' strong pitching performance with errorless defense. Phoenix jumped on Lakeview starter Nolan Yocum for three runs in the opening inning. Hidden Valley (2-8, 2-4 Skyline) scored two unearned runs in the first inning off Illinois Valley starter Daniel Houston. The Mustangs put together five hits in the third inning and scored six runs. Skyler Ogden provided a two-run single during the outburst. For Illinois Valley (2-8, 1-5 Skyline), Matt Marvin had two singles. Sophomore first baseman Josh Shippy hit a two-run home run in the second to account for most of the Knights' offense until their final turn at the plate. North Valley (4-4 overall, 2-1 Skyline) pounced upon two Chieftain errors, four walks and a wild pitch in the decisive seventh, when they also smacked a pair of singles. Rogue River (6-5, 2-4) was led by sophomore shortstop Ryan Girodat, who had a double, two RBIs and stole home. Kinsman went 3-for-3, hitting a two-run homer in the first inning and a solo blast in the third. Morgan Grohs' base-clearing double in the sixth highlighted a four-run outburst. The Pirates took advantage of six walks off three Logger pitchers in the fourth inning and scored six runs. Brenton Ferguson added a two-run double in the sixth for Phoenix. D.J. Ferrin collected two hits for the Pirates. Shannon Sizemore accounted for one of the Butte Falls runs when he doubled in the third and scored on an error.
