Slow-paced Irish slip by South LAKE OSWEGO - South Medford didn't have to pace itself against Sheldon Saturday in the adidas Laker Interstate Shootout girls basketball tournament. The Irish took care of that en route to a deliberate, 45-40 victory over South. South Medford finished the 16-team tournament in eighth place with a 2-2 record. It is 6-5 on the year. "Sheldon is real methodical in their offense," said Panthers coach Andrea Jaime. "They run it for ever and ever and ever. They're real patient. We only got 16 shots off in the first half." The pace of the game was frustrating in part because the Panthers weren't running their offense well at the other end. "We weren't disciplined in the first half," said Jaime. Sheldon led 30-17 at halftime, but South Medford held the Irish to three points in the third quarter and 15 in the second half to climb back into contention. "We did a little better job - made it a little tougher on them - and they were missing quite a few shots," said Jaime. However, just as South inched close, lone senior and point guard Whitney Grant fouled out with about four minutes left. "That hurt us a lot as far as trying to get the lead back," said Jaime. Kirsten Gillingham led South with 14 points and Natasha Wright scored 10. Beth Mueller had nine points and eight rebounds.
