MEDFORD Medford's Pixel Productions moves to new quarters In seeking a new home for Pixel Productions, the graphic design and web development agency's owners sought a place more conducive to its creative bent. By Greg Stiles Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Greg Stiles Mail Tribune Posted Sep. 19, 2014 @ 3:47 pm Updated Sep 19, 2014 at 6:38 PM By Greg Stiles Mail Tribune Posted Sep. 19, 2014 @ 3:47 pm Updated Sep 19, 2014 at 6:38 PM » Social News In seeking a new home for Pixel Productions, the graphic design and web development agency's owners sought a place more conducive to its creative bent. The company's former location on Sky Park Drive had a distinctively light-industrial feel. Not so on this street connecting East Main and Jackson thoroughfares. Pixel Productions, flanked by financial planning and tax-assistance firms, is now more within its own element, said co-owner Chris London. The 1,300-square-foot bungalow at 29 Hawthorne St. is amid refurbished houses that began morphing from residential to commercial use not many years after they were built in the 1940s. The firm acquired the property from a local insurance agent in July for $180,000 and sees the long-term benefits of the city's $1.5 million overhaul of the adjacent park. "We wanted to have a location that better represented our boutique-quality agency, and this nails it," London said. "Backed up against the park, this whole street is going through a cool renovation." "We're trading dollars we spent when it comes to the amount we were paying for leasing to owning our own building," London said. "That was a huge perk and incentive." Pixel Productions, founded in 2005 by London and Paul Quinn, handles everything design-related from print to Web, from marketing assets to product development to design and production, along with Web and e-commerce development. In essence, London said, "We help businesses build their brand." Among the lessons learned in the first decade, London said, was diversifying the customer base so Pixel's performance isn't dictated by a client's health. "That happened to Paul and me a couple times early on," London said. "We had one huge client, Colorbök, a gift company that had a division headquarters in Phoenix (Ariz.), and the whole division shut down. It was a real eye-opener for a young business, how things can change on you in a heartbeat. From that, we learned you've got to develop and hone what we do to offer services in a sustainable fashion." The Great Recession had an impact to one extent or another, shelving thousands of entrepreneurial projects. "We definitely seemed to ride it out a little easier than most," London said. "We got hit, but it didn't faze us for too long." Among the firm's clients are LCI Brands out of New York, an outdoor products supplier whose goods are sold at REI and Eddie Bauer. Las Vegas operations Gold and Silver Pawn and Counts Kustoms also are among their high-profile customers. Locally, Pixel Productions markets Apple Band Hard Cider produced in the Applegate Valley, and Cheesorizo, a meatless cheese sausage, made by Folia Farms in Rogue River. The company also handles the design for coffee seller The Human Bean, based in Medford. An open house is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26.
