Fun in the sun By Joe Zavala Jul 22, 2016 12:00 AM A A Players from 10 southern Oregon high school football teams gathered at Raider Stadium on Thursday for the annual Coach Kitchell Summer Competition. Each team participated in 7-on-7 passing games and the linemen challenge, which pits the big guys from each team against one another in a wide range of events, including: bench press relay, grip strength relay, 20-yard truck push, plate shuttle relay, obstacle course relay, tractor tire flip relay and tug of war tournament. Proceeds from the concession stand goes to the Pacific Rim Bowl fund. "We want to pay tribute to coach Dave Kitchell," Ashland coach Charlie Hall said in a press release. "Part of his legacy was the time and effort he made in training and pushing student athletes in the summer to be the best they can be.” Kitchell was a longtime Grizzly assistant football coach and Bellview Elementary school teacher who died of cancer in November of 2007. The high schools that took part in this year's Kitchell Competition were: Ashland, Crater, South Medford, North Medford, Phoenix, Cascade Christian, Eagle Point, Rogue River, Grants Pass and North Valley. null null null
