They’re all running unopposed. Peeters, 80, is looking for his second term as mayor. A 14-year resident of the city, Peeters has served a total of four and a half years on the council and as mayor. Before serving on the City Council, Peeters served as a member of the Planning Commission. Peeters says he hopes to continue his tenure as mayor with the present council. "We have such a cohesive council right now, and the city is in such a good place. I’d like to continue in the direction we have been heading. It seems to have been successful so far," says Peeters. Peeters retired from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center as director of transportation. JoAnne Mead, 71, is currently the only woman serving on the five-member council. Mead, a 10-year resident of Rogue River, also served on the Planning Commission before being appointed to the council in April of 2000. A retired financial analyst for IBM Corp., Mead says her two areas of primary interest are land-use planning and keeping city costs down. "It is important to protect land use and our rural atmosphere," says Mead. "Secondary to land use is the need to keep the city on track with an affordable cost of living for the citizens of Rogue River — particularly for the seniors." John Bond is the youngest member of the council at age 58. A retired educator and high school principal, Bond was appointed to the council in January of 2001. A 15-year resident of the city, Bond says his key focus is community relations. "I’m a firm believer in community service," says Bond. "The closer all the entities of the city can work together as a positive force, the better our city will be." Don Collins, 79, is the newest member of the council. Appointed in December 2001, Collins has lived in the area since 1974. A retired electrician and antique dealer, Collins is also a strong proponent of community service. "I feel you have to put back to the community. I’ve been a nonpaid member of public service for 50 years," says Collins. "I was senior center (now the community center) president five times."
