TENNIS Tosh, O'Brien pick up Big Al's crowns Comment By Joe Zavala for the Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Joe Zavala for the Mail Tribune Posted Jul. 17, 2016 at 8:36 PM By Joe Zavala for the Mail Tribune Posted Jul. 17, 2016 at 8:36 PM » Social News ASHLAND — Ashland High alum Vika O’Brien beat three-time champion McKenzie Hilmer, 6-1, 6-4, to claim the Big Al’s women’s open singles championship Sunday at Hunter Park. In other Big Al’s championship matches, Kylar Tosh beat Austin Schoenlein, 6-2, 7-6, in a battle of unseeded Medford players vying for the men’s open singles title, O’Brien and Ashley Knecht teamed up to win the women’s open doubles championship and Rox Rogers and Evan Schleining won the men’s open doubles final. O’Brien, who graduated from Ashland High in 2015 after being half of a team that won three straight OSAA Class 5A state doubles titles, denied Hilmer of Medford what would have been her fourth straight Big Al’s singles title. The win was an upset of sorts, since O’Brien — who just completed her freshman season at Lewis & Clark College — entered the nine-player women’s bracket unseeded. O’Brien trounced Isabelle Bahr of Redding, California, in the quarterfinals then eliminated doubles partner and No. 2 seed Knecht, 7-5, 6-4, in Saturday’s semifinals. The top-seeded Hilmer, who beat Elizabeth Stevens in last year’s championship match, lost a combined four games in her two previous matches before falling to O’Brien. Tosh and Schoenlein both eliminated seeded opponents en route to the surprise men’s open singles title — Tosh beat No. 3 seed Michael Gooding, 6-2, 6-3, in the quarterfinals Friday afternoon, while Schoenlein downed No. 2 seed John Dix, 6-1, 6-2, in the semifinals. As one of eight players in the 12-player field who did not get a first-round bye, Tosh had to win four matches, including two on Friday, en route to his first Big Al’s singles title. In one of the closest matches of the tournament, Mitchell Steadman of Jacksonville defeated top seed and defending champion Austin Kische, 6-7, 7-6, 1-0, in the Friday’s quarterfinals. Tosh eliminated Steadman, 6-4, 7-5, the following day. Knecht, an Ashlander, and O’Brien had little trouble running the table in the five-team women’s open doubles bracket, winning two quick matches. They beat unseeded Grants Pass duo Samantha Mendoza and Cynthia Ogden in the championship match, 6-2, 6-4. Rogers and Schleining were just as dominant in the five-team men’s open doubles bracket, beating Kische and Justin Barton in the championship match, 6-4, 6-3. In the nine-team 9.0 mixed doubles bracket, the No. 2-seeded team of Richard Jackson (Medford) and Dana Smith (Central Point) beat the top-seeded team of Ryan and Cindy Wilson (Palo Cedro, California) in the championship match, 6-4, 6-4. The Wilsons pulled out back-to-back three-set matches to advance to the final. Sunday’s Finals Men’s Open Singles — Kylar Tosh d. Austin Schoenlein, 6-2, 7-6 Men’s Open Doubles — Rogers-Schleining d.
