LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Jan. 1 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jan. 1, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Jan. 1, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Street weapons Thanks to Kenneth Ogden for his guest opinion in the Mail Tribune, Dec. 30. He has experienced what I notice most every time I'm driving on the local streets and on the freeway: people, of all ages, texting. They are behind the wheel of a two-ton weapon and they are engaged in distracted driving. Mr. Ogden was hit by one of these irresponsible drivers and will forever suffer the physical consequences. Apparently, the driver who hit Mr. Ogden has had no regrets about causing this accident. Life goes on as usual for that person. Talk about adding insult to injury. Really, are those messages that important that a driver will risk injuring or actually killing someone, or him/herself? It takes a split second to change one's life forever. Pull over, wait to text or call. Science tells us that although you think you are perfectly capable of multi-tasking, you aren't. J.R. Hunts Medford Do it now Once upon a time I wrote a letter to the editor of this newspaper about Medford needing a convention center built downtown in cooperation with Lithia's headquarters building project. Nobody listened. Too bad! It's too late now. Silly Medford — always a day (or more) late or a dollar (or more) short. Now Medford is spending $100,000, a grant (i.e., tax dollars), to figure out where, when or an amount it will take to build one. I only hope that Medford will figure out that this convention center needs to be built, and built in Medford, not Central Point or somewhere else. The old Medco property on the north side of Highway 62/238 and Riverside/99, easy access from Interstate 5 also. Please build it now and build it big. Do it right the first time. Parking lot across the Table Rock/Central Avenue extension, underground parking, pedestrian bridge: Build the center big enough to put on major conventions, trade shows, car shows, boat shows, etc. Do it now, Medford! Allen Stewart Jacksonville Be part of the solution Thank you for printing Ken Ogden’s guest opinion about the dangers of distracted driving from cellphones. Thank you to Ken Ogden for his superb guest opinion! It is terrifying how many people text and drive and are totally distracted by their cellphones. I am terribly sorry about the horrendous ordeal Mr. Ogden has been through and continues to go through because of a driver texting and running into him. It is appalling that the driver that ran in to and severely injured Mr. Ogden continues to drive distracted using a cellphone while driving instead of focusing. I hope the driver read his guest opinion. I hope that everyone who texts and uses cell phone while driving reads Mr. Ogden’s opinion and stops using cellphones while driving. MADD — Mothers Against Drunk Drivers — started educating people and changing laws and then pushing and enforcing laws against drunken driving. Over the years and with immense work, MADD has made a positive difference. We all need to be part of the solution. Thank you Mr. Ogden for educating us.
