What are the signs for? — Melissa The bright signs have been installed up and down the Oregon coast to help beachgoers identify where they are in case of an emergency, according to the Curry Coastal Pilot. The signs are designed to be easily visible by beachgoers, who can tell the number to dispatchers, the Brookings-based newspaper reported this month. The towering signs are visible at spots like Harris Beach State Park near Brookings and along the coast behind a string of Gold Beach hotels. Tourists and even locals often don't know the name of the beach they are on and have trouble communicating where they are when trouble strikes. "Often we have tourists traveling up and down the coast. They could have an emergency," said Brookings Police Department Sergeant Terry Murray. "We get a call, 'I need help.' We say, 'Where are you?' They say, 'I'm on a beach.' That doesn't help us out." Emergency responders are able to pinpoint a person's location if the person can see or remember a numbered sign, Murray said. The system is useful for everyone from police to ambulance drivers to Coast Guard rescuers, he said. So far, 197 signs have been installed along the Oregon coastline, with an ultimate goal of 420 signs, the Curry Coastal Pilot reported.
