Pelleschi admitted from Jackson County Jail using the circuit court's teleconferencing system that on the afternoon of Jan. 21, he kicked open the door into his mother and stepfather's Phoenix trailer at Horizon Mobile Village at 4074 S. Pacific Highway, told them that he had just robbed a bank and that if they contacted the police he would kill them. At 3 p.m. that day, Pelleschi demanded money from bank tellers at the Umpqua Bank down the street at 4000 S. Pacific Highway. According to an affidavit filed in the case, Pelleschi fled the bank with approximately $5,400 before witnesses spotted him running through the mobile home park. The bank and witness descriptions gave officers probable cause to check Pelleschi's mother's trailer because police had "many" prior contacts with Pelleschi at the location. When police knocked, Pelleschi's stepfather opened the door. Inside, Phoenix police officers found Pelleschi hiding underneath the kitchen table and detained him without further incident. He had in his possession a black BB gun that looked like a real handgun. Restitution may include costs to repair the trailer door, but according to Pelleschi's court-appointed defense attorney Clint Oborn, all the money taken from the bank had been recovered. The affidavit shows that Daniel attempted to hide the money taken from the bank behind a curtain in the trailer. Pelleschi also quickly changed his clothes in the trailer and tried to hide what he wore during the robbery by throwing those clothes in the washer. In a letter submitted to the court Feb. 9 from jail, Pelleschi said he committed the robbery because he was trying to buy a home for his drug-addicted girlfriend and himself, and went about it "all wrong." Pelleschi's mother addressed Jackson County Circuit Court Judge Hoppe, asking for leniency and addiction treatment for her son. "Everything he's ever done, he's always been drunk," she said before adding that she'd like to see him get help. She asked Judge Hoppe to lift a no-contact order one time to visit her son in the Jackson County Jail before he's transported to the Oregon Department of Corrections. She also requested he be able to contact her while he's in prison. Judge Hoppe told her he could arrange a single meeting, but told Pelleschi's mother that the court doesn't have control of prison operations or parole and probation conditions. In the plea agreement, Pelleschi pleaded guilty to two felony counts of coercion and was sentenced to 31 to 36 months in the two charges, which he'll serve consecutively. He told the court that he admitted to the charges against him in a plea agreement because he didn't want his mother to have to testify against him in court and "make her cry." "Mom, I love you," he said over the teleconferencing system. He also told the court that prison will be an opportunity for him to turn his life around. In the Feb. 9 letter, he said he's looking forward to prison as an opportunity to pursue sobriety, read self-help books, take college courses and "get my head my heart my body re alined (sic)."
